CNA/Endoscopy Tech/Unit Clerk/Assistant Activities Director – Wrangell Medical Center – Wrangell, AK
As a CNA at this facility I assisted licensed nursing staff in the care of patients and residents.
Working in this small rural hospital with limited support staff gave me the opportunity to
work in all areas including radiology, sterile processing, emergency room, acute care,
operating room, long term care, and administration. My duties included assisting patients
with ADLs, assisting licensed personnel with procedures, EKGs on both inpatients and
outpatients, central sterilization of instrument trays used in the hospital and local physician’s
offices. In the long term care wing of the hospital I worked with the Activities director to
provide daily activities and entertainment to as many as 17 residents with many culturally
diverse backgrounds. As a unit clerk I transcribed orders and manually scheduled orders since
no computer entry system was available. I coordinated admissions, discharges, transports out
during medevac situations, scheduled appointments, performed EKGs and Holter monitor
testing. I also began training as an endoscopy technician and assisted the Internal medicine physicians that came to town with their procedures. This included set up and cleaning of
equipment, assisting with the camera and scope during the procedure, obtaining specimens
during procedures, and assisting the physician as needed.

course. After successfully completing the course I worked as a monitor tech in a 12 bed CCU.

remote hospitals in Hobart, Blackwell, and Lawton Oklahoma. At any time I had the potential
to be monitoring 60 patients at a time. After becoming fluent with my duties as a monitor
tech I took the AUA course which gave me the opportunity on the floor to provide more
advanced care to the patients I cared for. My training allowed me to provide wound care,
suture removal, NG tube insertion, foley catheter insertion, phlebotomy skills, suctioning of
mechanically ventilated patients, and creating aseptic and sterile fields for procedures. My
last training course enabled me to work as a health unit coordinator. I transcribed orders into
a computer order entry database system called C PRO. This position gave me the opportunity
to see how all the processes work together.
